The island of Flores is notorious among cyclists for its steep roads. We decide against taking the main road and opt for a route through remote mountain regions and along the Flores Sea on the north coast. The religion, music, clothing and architecture we encounter on Flores bring us closer to our idea of the “South Seas.” The landscapes and views are picturesque, but they have been bought at a high price through a battle on several fronts. Perhaps too high a price. Finally, another front opens up, making life even more difficult for us: we fall ill, first Belinda, then Tizian. Now it is important to tactically take rest days at the right time, because the number of possible rest days is limited if we don’t want to miss our ferry to Timor. To relieve our strained bodies a little, we choose the easier route on Timor, along the main road across the interior of the island, which still has enough elevation gain in store for us. We lose shoes and gain a first impression of our next country thanks to smoothie mixer Ivan.
