Days 635–645 • Tazhen – Khiva •
Country Background to Uzbekistan
Spring Begins in Khwarazm
Published on 06.04.2024, 13:19 in Khiva, Uzbekistan
This report’s podcast is only available in german: In Choresmien beginnt der Frühling.
The Kazakh-Uzbek border does not mark a change in terms of landscape at first, it remains brown steppe. But the steppe is no longer quite as endless as in Kazakhstan: It is “only” 340 kilometers to Khwarazm, an oasis landscape in central Uzbekistan. From one kilometer to the next we are no longer surrounded by light brown steppe, but by dark brown fields as well as mud houses and canals of the same color. Luckily there are also a few larger bushes and trees in between. We cycle for several days through the fields for which the water is taken from the Amu Darya River, which once fed the Aral Sea. Finally we reach the ancient trading city of Khiva. Although the spruced-up old town is completely geared towards tourists, we find it a quiet, relaxing, sunny little paradise after all the desert and enjoy a few days of rest between magnificent madrasas, palaces and minarets.
